FINGERSMITH (2005)

s.peter ransley from the novel by sarah waters

if you’re a lesbian and you’re interested in film and literature–or even TV movie adaptation and literature–then watch this.

this is a BBC-produced two-part mini-series, mga a little over an hour each part. halaw ang kuwento sa nobela ng openly out lesbian writer na si sarah waters. i just couldn’t bring myself to read it because i am generally not a fan of period drama in literature kasi na written by a brit/set in uk (must be a past life — i hate corsets! chos.), unless super imaginative siya, of course exceptions ang two favorite british bi/lesbian authors ko na sina virginia woolf at jeanette winterson.

well, siguro okay naman magsulat si sarah waters. panalo lang kasi ang story structures niya sa kuwentong ito. it’s about deceptions and misconceptions all in all. kung ayaw mo ng spoilers, stop reading this now.

it’s set in late 1800s sa uk, about this thief or fingersmith as they term it in slang sa uk, na babae, si susan, who was a cohort of another trickster na lalaki. together, they pretended to lure in this rich heiress from the countryside, si maud, who was brought up by an uncle who collected a library of slightly pornographic books and written materials. secretary niya si maud, kaya may special attention to detail ek ang mga precious writing hands ni maud. similarly, si fingersmith susan is good with her hands, mabilis kamay, dahil nga trained magnanakaw, dahil isa siyang orphan na pinalaki ng isang kinda-family of thieves sa seedy part ng london.

so nasaan ang kabiyaningan dito? aside from that special symbolic attention to the hands — na feeling ko e di agad mage-gets ng mga di biyaning heheh — ay nasa fact na, against the odds and circumstances plus the false personas they were presenting to each other, fingersmith susan and porno secretary maud fell in love amidst slightly dizzying twists and turns, na sa pag-twist at turn ng plot e akala mo yun na yun, only to find more twists and then more turns later on, and so on and so forth, hanggang sa kahuli-hulihang eksena ay may twist and turn pa rin! talk about edge-of-your-seat revelations! panalo mag-isip ng story structures si waters!

the first part dealt with this trickster guy who conned his way into this rich uncle’s house. kunwari high society manliligaw siya nung maud, pero gusto lang pala niya makuha ang mana ng maud once mapakasal na si maud (na nasa kasulatan ng will ng nanay niyang richina na namatay). si susan fingersmith e hinikayat ni trickster na magpanggap na maid/lady-in-waiting eklat ng richina maud para mabuyo niya ang maud na mapaibig kay trickster eklat. needless to say, silang dalawang gelay ang nagka-inlaban. pero di doon nagtatapos ang kuwento. alam pala ni maud ang pakana, at niloko nila ni trickster si fingersmith — pinakulong sa mental hospital para kunwari siya si maud, para makuha ang mana. aaaah magulo! basta maganda siya! walang panama ang 20-story arc teleserye na napapanood mo gabi-gabi sa kapuso o kapamilya! hahaha.

may konting lapses lang sa production though. hindi masyadong established ang pagka-fingersmith noong una ni susan, pero kumeri naman sa second part. ay, ang hirap din ikuwento, pero masaya siyang panoorin! kahit slight nakakahilo! hahaha! dito lang ako nakakita ng kuwentong successful na lumipat ang pov from one character to the next, at equal na silang na-develop fully sa naratibo.the whole story belonged to each of them, hinati baga. galeng. hirap i-achieve yun ha, shifting povs! diyosa si waters. hm makabili na nga ng books niya.

bast watch watch watch. masaya siya. at masaya ang kilig factor ng byaning falling-in-love-an moda. hehe.yes, kahit period piece. bumenta ati!
